Engineering a Productive Route Ahead

Building Beyond the Blueprint

In the world of construction and industrial engineering, some firms build structures; others build trust. In Trinidad and Tobago’s evolving commercial and industrial landscape, LIDA Engineering has emerged as one of the latter—a young company with the mindset of a veteran, the ambition of a startup, and the operational discipline of an organization many times its age.

At first glance, LIDA Engineering’s rise seems almost improbable. Barely three years into its journey, the company has already secured projects spanning commercial developments, industrial installations, process piping, structural fabrication, offshore support, and some of the region’s most recognizable hospitality and retail spaces. But spend time speaking with its leadership, and it quickly becomes clear that this success was never accidental. It was engineered.

Led by Managing Director Rasal Chang and Director Iqbal Chang, LIDA Engineering was born not from a boardroom strategy session, but from years of experience earned on job sites, inside plants, across construction zones, and within some of the Caribbean’s most demanding industrial environments. Together, the brothers brought two different disciplines under one roof—civil and commercial construction on one side, and industrial and oil and gas expertise on the other—and, in doing so, created what has become one of the region’s most agile engineering firms.

What they built was never intended to be just another contractor. It was intended to be something far more valuable: a complete engineering ecosystem.

Two Disciplines, One Vision

LIDA Engineering operates with what the Changs describe as two interconnected arms. One side of the business focuses on civil and commercial construction, delivering projects that include office buildings, steel structures, residential developments, restaurants, and fit-outs. The other side is rooted firmly in industrial execution, specializing in fabrication, welding, scaffolding, abrasive blasting, corrosion prevention, process piping, and specialized oil and gas infrastructure.

It is this duality that has become one of the company’s defining advantages.

“We started with absolutely nothing—just an idea, a vision, and experience,” Chang says.

That experience mattered. Before launching LIDA Engineering, the brothers had built careers on parallel paths. Rousselle was immersed in commercial construction and project development, while Iqbal had earned his reputation in the oil and gas sector, overseeing industrial contracts and high-specification engineering works. When they brought those experiences together under one banner, the result was a company capable of moving seamlessly between the boardroom, the blueprint, and the field.

That integration is more than a business model. It is a philosophy.

The workforce handling LIDA’s commercial projects often comes from industrial backgrounds, bringing with them a safety-first culture rarely seen in conventional construction. In a market where cost-cutting can sometimes take precedence over long-term durability, LIDA has chosen a different path.

“Everything we do has to be safe, built to code, and built to last,” says Chang.

Engineering as Advisory

Many contractors are brought in after the vision is set. LIDA Engineering prefers to be involved before the first sketch is drawn.

One of the company’s fastest-growing differentiators is its advisory role. Rather than simply executing a client’s plans, the firm becomes part of the planning process itself—working through budgets, square footage, return on investment, and operational efficiency before construction even begins.

That consultative approach has earned LIDA relationships with major developers and entrepreneurs in Trinidad and Guyana, including high-profile real estate stakeholders whose portfolios span commercial, hospitality, and entertainment assets.

Clients arrive with an idea. LIDA helps transform that idea into something economically viable.

“We don’t just build what they ask for,” Chang explains. “Sometimes we recommend a different approach entirely if it makes better financial sense.”

That level of involvement has positioned the company as more than a builder. It has made them a strategic partner.

The Safety Premium

In engineering, quality often comes with a cost. The Changs understand this better than most.

Operating in both industrial and commercial spaces has exposed them to a recurring market challenge: not every client values engineering rigor at the same level. In sectors where timelines are tight and budgets are tighter, corners can be tempting to cut.

LIDA has refused to play that game.

The company has implemented its own internal safety management systems, works with external health and safety consultants, and continues pursuing internationally recognized operational standards. While some competitors may see safety as a compliance exercise, LIDA treats it as a core business advantage.

“Sometimes quality costs more,” Chang says. “But our clients understand they are paying for something that lasts.”

It is a statement that speaks not only to engineering standards but to market positioning. LIDA does not compete on being the cheapest. It competes to be the most dependable.

Building a Team Before Building Projects

One of the most remarkable parts of LIDA Engineering’s story is not the projects it has completed, but the culture it has built behind the scenes.

Construction is notoriously cyclical. Projects come and go. Teams are often assembled temporarily, then disbanded once the contract ends.

LIDA chose another route.

From its earliest days, the company made a decision to retain its people even during slower periods. Rather than hiring labor on a project-by-project basis, the company kept employees on payroll, invested in certifications, expanded cross-training programs, and created an internal workforce capable of handling nearly every discipline required in-house.

That means LIDA’s teams can move between plumbing, electrical systems, drywall installation, concrete works, fabrication, welding, structural assembly, and industrial maintenance without relying heavily on outside subcontractors.

For the Changs, that wasn’t just about efficiency. It was about loyalty.

“We wanted our team to believe in the vision,” Chang says. “Not work from fear—work from belief.”

That belief is reinforced through regular training, recognition programs, team-building events, and a culture where employees are kept informed about the company’s direction.

The result is something increasingly rare in construction: continuity.

Projects That Speak for Themselves

LIDA Engineering’s portfolio already reads like that of a much older organization.

Among its completed and ongoing works are hospitality developments, corporate headquarters, retail environments, entertainment installations, amusement infrastructure, and high-value industrial projects across Trinidad and Guyana.

From process piping and corrosion prevention systems in the energy sector to commercial spaces tied to internationally recognized brands, the firm has demonstrated an unusual range of capabilities.

Over the past two years alone, the company reports executing tens of millions in industrial work while continuing to expand its commercial presence. Major assignments have included structural and fabrication work, large storage tank projects, abrasive blasting systems, and offshore engineering support.

What is perhaps most impressive is not the diversity of the projects, but the consistency of execution.

LIDA is not trying to dominate one niche.

It is quietly becoming indispensable across several.

The Next Frontier

For most three-year-old companies, growth means winning the next contract.

For LIDA Engineering, growth means building an ecosystem.

Among the company’s most ambitious plans is the acquisition of a two-acre parcel of land to develop a larger operational facility and, ultimately, a small industrial park.

The concept is bold but deeply strategic. The site would serve as a centralized hub for fabrication, blasting services, industrial rentals, engineering support, and supply chain coordination—creating synergies across multiple disciplines while serving the broader oil and gas market.

At the same time, the company is preparing to enter an entirely different segment: subscription-based residential and commercial maintenance services.

For the Changs, this expansion feels natural. With an already multidisciplinary workforce, LIDA is uniquely positioned to offer clients 24-hour support for everything from electrical failures and plumbing emergencies to structural repairs and mechanical issues.

It is another example of the company’s larger philosophy: if there is a problem worth solving, build the capability to solve it.

More Than a Construction Company

Ask the Changs what defines LIDA Engineering, and they won’t start with revenue, equipment, or project volume.

They will talk about people.

They will talk about culture.

They will talk about vision.

That may sound unusual in an industry built on steel, concrete, and deadlines, but perhaps that is exactly why LIDA Engineering has captured so much momentum in such a short time.

In just three years, the company has built far more than structures. It has built a reputation rooted in technical excellence, accountability, and a willingness to challenge the shortcuts that have become all too common in modern construction.

And as Trinidad’s industrial sector regains momentum and Guyana’s construction boom continues to reshape the regional economy, LIDA Engineering appears positioned not simply to participate in that growth—but to help define it.

Because for LIDA, engineering has never been just about what gets built.

It is about what endures.
