Fueling a Nation’s Future

Investing in Resilient Infrastructure, Sustainable Innovation, and Customer Confidence

Since acquiring Chevron Texaco’s assets in The Bahamas in 2012, Rubis Bahamas has steadily transformed itself into one of the country’s leading energy providers. Today, the company operates an extensive network of service stations, marinas, aviation facilities and fuel terminals that serve not only Bahamian consumers but also commercial customers and international marine traffic throughout the region.

Backed by the strength of the wider Rubis Caribbean organization, the company continues to invest heavily in infrastructure, technology, and sustainability while maintaining a sharp focus on customer service and operational excellence.

“Our brand has grown on the Bahamian people,” says Managing Director Micah Knowles. “They appreciate the fact that when you hear Rubis, they know they are getting good quality fuel and good service.”

Building on a Strong Foundation

Rubis Bahamas’ story is rooted in a significant transition that reshaped the country’s petroleum industry. In April 2012, Rubis acquired the former Chevron Texaco operations, inheriting decades of infrastructure while embarking on a new chapter of investment and modernization.

While the company’s origins in The Bahamas stretch back many decades through the Texaco brand, Rubis immediately focused on expanding both its operational capabilities and regional presence. Across the Caribbean, acquisitions helped establish a substantial footprint, but today, growth has evolved beyond purchasing assets.

“Rubis purchased all of the assets of Chevron Texaco back in 2012,” Knowles explains.

“Since then, it has been steady growth for Rubis not only in The Bahamas but also throughout the Caribbean through acquisition. Now that we have reached a point where we have a footprint in many countries, our growth is now from new business. We are growing by volumes rather than by acquisition.”

That evolution reflects a mature organization focused on strengthening customer relationships, expanding market opportunities, and identifying new revenue streams. Whether through additional service stations, marine bunkering, or commercial partnerships, Rubis Bahamas continues to broaden its influence across the energy sector.

Managing Energy Across an Island Nation

Operating in the Bahamas demands a logistical sophistication unlike that of many mainland markets. Fuel imported into the country must be received, stored, tested, transported, and delivered safely across numerous islands separated by hundreds of miles of ocean.

Rubis Bahamas has developed an integrated distribution system built around three strategically located terminals. Products arrive through the company’s primary import terminal before being distributed to additional storage facilities and ultimately delivered throughout New Providence and the Family Islands by tanker trucks and barge operations.

Each month, the company moves tens of thousands of barrels of gasoline, diesel, aviation fuel, and lubricants while maintaining rigorous safety standards throughout the process.

“We move over 120,000 barrels per month in product, sometimes more,” Knowles says. “Because we have so many islands, safety has to come first. You can understand the risks when you are moving products so often.”

Beyond retail fuel sales, Rubis supplies aviation customers through a dedicated terminal at Lynden Pindling International Airport, services commercial marine operations, and distributes lubricants to businesses throughout The Bahamas and the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Supporting these operations requires a workforce that functions around the clock.

“We are pretty much running a 24-seven operation when it comes to the fuel business,” Knowles says.

Behind the scenes, employees oversee quality assurance, inventory management, transportation logistics and customer service while ensuring uninterrupted fuel supplies for hospitals, emergency services, airports, tourism operators and thousands of everyday consumers.

Quality That Builds Customer Confidence

In a competitive marketplace where fuel pricing remains tightly regulated, Rubis Bahamas has differentiated itself through consistency rather than cost alone.

Knowles believes the company’s greatest achievement has been establishing trust with Bahamian consumers through dependable products and service standards.

“I would say the most significant part is making sure that we have a brand that persons appreciate here in The Bahamas,” she says. “They look at the brand as one of quality.”

That reputation has become one of the company’s strongest competitive advantages.

Rather than competing solely on price, Rubis has focused on delivering reliable products through modernized infrastructure, strict quality control procedures, and continuous investment in customer-facing facilities. Renovated service stations, upgraded equipment, and improved retail environments reinforce that commitment every day.

The company’s extensive marina network also supports one of The Bahamas’ most important industries. With recreational boaters, yachts, and commercial marine traffic regularly navigating Bahamian waters, dependable fueling infrastructure plays an important role in sustaining tourism and maritime commerce throughout the islands.

Investing in People and Infrastructure

Behind Rubis Bahamas’ extensive operational network is a company culture built around collaboration, accessibility, and shared responsibility. While the organization operates complex logistics and fuel distribution systems across multiple islands, its leadership places equal emphasis on creating an environment where employees feel empowered to contribute ideas and participate in the company’s ongoing evolution.

Rubis Bahamas employs approximately 60 to 65 people across its wholesale operations, encompassing finance, human resources, information technology, sales and marketing, terminal operations, aviation services, and logistics. Together, these teams oversee an operation that never truly stops.

Knowles believes one of the company’s greatest strengths lies in its inclusive approach to leadership.

“Our culture is very inclusive,” she says. “We have a close-knit employee system where we often get together for activities. No doors are shut. You can walk into a manager’s office and give your recommendations on things you see. We have a saying that if you see it, you own it.”

That philosophy encourages accountability at every level while fostering continuous improvement throughout the organization. Whether an employee works at one of the company’s terminals, in aviation fueling, or within the corporate office, every individual is encouraged to identify opportunities for better service, safer operations, and improved efficiency.

That same long-term mindset extends to the company’s capital investment strategy. Since entering The Bahamas in 2012, Rubis has invested approximately $70 million into modernizing and expanding its operations throughout the country.

“We’ve invested heavily in the country,” Knowles says.

Those investments span virtually every aspect of the business. Aging underground storage tanks are being replaced with modern double-wall systems that provide enhanced environmental protection and improved monitoring capabilities. Advanced inventory management technologies have been installed to improve operational efficiency and product accountability. At the retail level, service stations are being transformed through extensive renovations, while older buildings are, in many cases, being completely replaced with modern, energy-efficient facilities designed to better serve customers while reducing operating costs.

The company’s terminals continue to receive significant upgrades as storage capacity expands to accommodate growing demand while maintaining the flexibility needed to support future business opportunities.

Balancing Traditional Energy with Emerging Technologies

Although petroleum products remain the foundation of Rubis Bahamas’ business, the company recognizes that the future energy landscape will be increasingly diverse. Rather than viewing renewable energy as competition, Rubis is positioning itself to become part of that transition.

Solar energy represents one of the company’s most immediate opportunities.

Recognizing The Bahamas’ abundant sunshine, Rubis has begun installing solar systems throughout its own facilities, including service stations and terminals, to reduce electricity consumption and lower carbon emissions. The initiative forms part of the wider Rubis Caribbean sustainability strategy while creating measurable operational savings.

“We are mandated to reduce our carbon levels,” Knowles explains. “We are starting first with our service stations.”

The company is also extending that opportunity to commercial customers through an innovative leasing model that removes the significant upfront cost typically associated with solar installations.

“If customers are willing to go solar but aren’t capable of affording it, we have a process where we can finance it and lease the equipment to them,” Knowles says.

That practical approach allows businesses to participate in the transition toward renewable energy while working within the regulatory realities of The Bahamas’ electricity market.

Rubis is simultaneously evaluating additional alternative energy opportunities in preparation for tomorrow’s changing energy landscape while continuing to meet today’s fuel demands. The initiative reflects Rubis’ commitment to preparing for tomorrow’s energy landscape while continuing to meet today’s fuel demands.

Looking Ahead with Confidence

Like every participant in the global energy industry, Rubis Bahamas continues to navigate an environment shaped by geopolitical uncertainty, fluctuating commodity prices and evolving customer expectations. International conflicts have contributed to fuel price volatility, while airlines and commercial transportation providers continue adjusting operations in response to changing market conditions.

For Rubis Bahamas, those global realities reinforce the importance of disciplined planning, strategic investment and strong local leadership.

The company also continues discussions surrounding fuel margin structures that have remained largely unchanged for decades within The Bahamas. Knowles believes modernizing that framework will support continued investment and ensure the long-term sustainability of the country’s fuel distribution network.

Despite those challenges, Rubis remains focused on the opportunities ahead. Continued infrastructure investment, expansion into new energy solutions, modernization of retail facilities, and ongoing commitment to operational excellence position the company to remain a leader within the Bahamian energy sector for years to come.
