Creating the Right Infrastructure
Building Belize’s Future Through Three Generations of Excellence
Every successful nation has organizations that quietly leave a lasting imprint on its landscape. Their names may not always be the most recognizable to the public, yet their work shapes skylines, strengthens infrastructure and improves the quality of life for generations. In Belize, Anthony Thurton & Associates Limited has become one of those organizations.
For nearly five decades, the company has played a central role in designing the buildings, educational facilities, financial institutions, infrastructure, and community projects that support the country’s continued growth. What began as the vision of one determined architect has evolved into a multidisciplinary practice with expertise spanning architecture, civil and structural engineering, project management, and property development.
More importantly, the firm’s story is one of family. Founded by Anthony Thurton and strengthened by the next generation of professionals he inspired, the company demonstrates how knowledge, values, and opportunity can be passed from one generation to the next while continually adapting to meet the changing demands of a growing nation.
As Belize experiences unprecedented levels of development, Anthony Thurton & Associates Limited remains committed to delivering thoughtful, technically sound, and innovative solutions while preparing the next generation to continue that legacy.
A Foundation Built on Vision
The origins of Anthony Thurton & Associates Limited date back to 1975, when founder Anthony Thurton established his own architectural practice after working with respected British architect Frank Spooner. When Spooner eventually left Belize, many of his clients remained with Thurton, providing the foundation for what would become one of the country’s leading consulting firms.
Initially, the firm’s work centered primarily on residential projects and financial institutions. Local banks became long-term clients, while residential commissions steadily expanded the firm’s reputation for quality design and dependable service.
That foundation ultimately created opportunities not only for business growth but also for family succession. Anthony Thurton encouraged each of his children to pursue complementary professional disciplines that would strengthen the business for decades to come.
The eldest son studied architecture in Jamaica. Dwayne Thurton followed by earning qualifications in civil and structural engineering. Another brother specialized in construction engineering, while their youngest sibling pursued marketing studies in the United States. Together, they returned to Belize, bringing new expertise that transformed a successful architectural practice into a diversified professional services organization.

“Our family all came back and contributed in one way or the other,” Thurton says. “We have a group of companies. Anthony Thurton & Associates is probably the main company, but we do have a few other related companies. We do a little bit of real estate and property management, so it’s all kind of tied together.”
That collaborative family approach continues to define the company’s culture today.
Growing Beyond Architecture
While architecture remains at the firm’s core, Anthony Thurton & Associates Limited has evolved into a comprehensive consulting practice capable of managing projects from concept through completion.
The addition of engineering expertise dramatically expanded the firm’s capabilities. Today, commercial developments represent a significant portion of the company’s portfolio, complemented by public infrastructure, educational facilities, drainage systems, water supply projects, and structural engineering assignments throughout Belize.
Residential work, once the firm’s primary focus, has gradually become a smaller portion of its business as larger commercial and public-sector projects have increased.
This diversification has allowed the company to remain resilient while responding to changing market demands. Rather than concentrating on a single market sector, the firm has deliberately maintained broad technical capabilities that position it to support both private and public clients.
That flexibility has become one of its greatest competitive strengths.
Designing Projects That Strengthen Communities
Across Belize, Anthony Thurton & Associates Limited continues to deliver projects that directly improve the daily lives of residents.
Among its most recent accomplishments is the completion of a new branch for Holy Redeemer Credit Union in Belmopan, Belize. Although not the firm’s largest assignment, the project presented complex engineering challenges involving the transformation of an aging building into a modern financial institution through significant structural improvements and architectural enhancements.
Education has also become a major area of focus.
Working under the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology with Inter-American Development Bank funding, the firm is designing new STEAM education facilities across Belize, helping create modern learning environments that support science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics education for future generations.
Simultaneously, Anthony Thurton & Associates Limited continues its work on the Belize Education Sector Reform Project, an ambitious initiative involving improvements to dozens of educational campuses across the country. While pandemic-related delays affected progress, construction has resumed with renewed momentum.
The company’s expanding portfolio also includes roads, drainage systems, and rural water infrastructure that serve communities throughout Belize.
Each project reflects a consistent philosophy: combining practical engineering with thoughtful design to produce facilities that remain functional and valuable for decades.
Relationships That Deliver Results
Complex infrastructure projects increasingly require collaboration between multiple specialists, and Anthony Thurton & Associates has built long-standing relationships with internationally respected engineering organizations.
Among its most significant partnerships is its decades-long relationship with AECOM, which traces its roots through earlier organizations including Oscar Faber Consulting Engineers and Faber-Maunsell.
Together, the firms have collaborated on major projects such as the Central Bank of Belize headquarters, solid waste development initiatives, and other technically demanding assignments requiring highly specialized expertise.
“When there’s something highly specialized, we would routinely associate with a firm like that,” Thurton explains.
These collaborations enable the company to bring international best practices and advanced technical capabilities to projects while maintaining the local knowledge that remains essential to successful development within Belize.

Keeping Pace with Technology
Few industries have experienced technological transformation as rapidly as architecture and engineering, and Anthony Thurton & Associates Limited has consistently embraced change.
The firm’s evolution mirrors the industry’s own progression—from hand drafting with T-squares to parallel bars, followed by the widespread adoption of AutoCAD, and now the transition toward sophisticated Building Information Modeling through Revit BIM.
The investment extends well beyond drafting software. Structural analysis programs, engineering design platforms, and project management technologies continue to evolve, requiring continual investment in software, equipment, and staff development.
“We are investing heavily in those technologies,” Thurton says. “Everything has evolved.”
This commitment ensures the firm remains competitive while improving design accuracy, project coordination, and overall efficiency for increasingly complex assignments.
Equally important is investment in people.
Anthony Thurton & Associates Limited currently employs a multidisciplinary team that includes architects, civil engineers, CAD technicians, project managers, contract administrators, and support professionals. As project volumes continue to increase, the company is actively expanding its workforce to meet demand.
Managing Opportunity in a Growing Market
Ironically, one of the firm’s greatest challenges stems from its own success and from Belize’s remarkable economic growth.
According to Thurton, the current volume of development activity exceeds anything he has witnessed during three decades in the profession.
“The volume that we’re seeing is unprecedented in my entire 30 years of experience,” Thurton says.
That growth has created significant pressure on the availability of qualified architects, engineers, and construction professionals.
“The single biggest challenge we have here is the lack of human resources.”
The shortage extends throughout both design and construction, forcing firms across Belize to collaborate with professionals from neighboring countries to meet project demands.
Rather than pursuing unlimited growth, Anthony Thurton & Associates Limited has adopted a disciplined approach.
The company has become increasingly selective when accepting new assignments, focusing on maintaining quality and ensuring projects receive the attention they deserve.
“We don’t like to turn away work,” Thurton says. “But at this point, we’re a little bit more selective than we would normally be. The important thing is for us to manage it properly and not get overextended.”
That measured strategy reflects decades of experience and an understanding that sustainable success depends on balancing opportunity with capacity.

Preparing for the Next Generation
Tourism continues to reshape Belize’s economy, driving significant investment in hospitality and tourism-related developments throughout the country.
Rather than concentrating exclusively on one market segment, Anthony Thurton & Associates has intentionally maintained a broad portfolio of expertise that allows it to respond wherever opportunities emerge.
The company has also expanded into real estate development through one of its sister companies, creating additional avenues for growth while leveraging its extensive design and engineering knowledge.
Yet perhaps the firm’s greatest achievement is not measured by the number of buildings completed or infrastructure projects delivered.
For Thurton, success is reflected in the emergence of a third generation preparing to continue the family’s legacy.
“My dad, who started the business, is still working like crazy,” Thurton says. “The biggest achievement in my mind is for us to survive this long and then be in a fairly good position to pass it over to the next generation.”
Each generation has benefited from greater educational opportunities than the one before, allowing the company to continually strengthen its technical capabilities while remaining grounded in the values established by its founders.
Looking ahead, the company’s immediate priority remains managing sustained growth responsibly while maintaining the reputation built over nearly fifty years of service.
Equally important is preserving the family culture that has guided Anthony Thurton & Associates from its earliest days.
“One of the most important things to me is emphasizing the gratitude the second and third generation have with respect to my dad and my mother,” Thurton reflects. “My mother and my father really started all of this, and everything is sitting on their shoulders.”
That sense of gratitude, combined with technical excellence, thoughtful leadership, and a willingness to embrace innovation, positions Anthony Thurton & Associates Limited to continue shaping Belize’s future for generations to come.
As the country enters an exciting new chapter of development, the firm stands ready to help design not only the buildings and infrastructure that define modern Belize, but also the enduring legacy of family, professionalism, and community that has always been its greatest foundation.
